UNECE Launches Global Initiative to Enhance Garment and Footwear Traceability
The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) has launched a Community of Practice aimed at improving traceability and transparency within the global garment and footwear industries. This initiative builds on a three-year challenge set by the European Union and UN Member States to prove the feasibility of sustainable practices in these sectors.
During this period, over 20 pilot projects and 110 pledges were made by leading brands, manufacturers, NGOs, industry associations, and sustainability initiatives across nearly 30 countries. These projects demonstrated the positive impact of tracing various materials, including cotton, leather, synthetics, cellulose, and wool, from production to end-use and beyond. UNECE’s newly released report, unveiled at a recent event in Milan, details the best practices and progress made through these pilot projects.
The Community of Practice is designed to serve as a platform for ongoing collaboration, sharing knowledge, and scaling up successful traceability initiatives. The initiative also supports the development of future legislation, aimed at further enhancing sustainability and accountability in the garment and footwear industries.
By promoting greater transparency and traceability, UNECE's efforts seek to address critical environmental and social issues within the fashion supply chain, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable and ethical global market.
